To write a great half-hour comedy script, you must grab your audience immediately. That means creating a superb and hilarious Cold Open. The NUEA West and our event co-sponsor The Black List are excited to announce The Cold Cut, Hollywood’s first competition of original TV comedy pilot scripts that highlights the importance of great Cold Opens.
Up to eight original half-hour comedy pilots will be selected for the event, and NU directors and actors will stage live performances of each script’s Cold Open scene. Then, Battle of the Bands-style, the audience will vote on their favorite scene. After intermission, the winning Cold Open that makes “the cut” will have its entire script read on stage.

Prior to the live June 3rd event, each selected Cold Cut writer will receive feedback notes from at least one working staff writer, showrunner, producer or agent. Selected writers also receive two free months of script hosting on The Black List and one complimentary review. The Cold Cut winner will receive a prize package featuring a full year of free Black List hosting services and more.

Pilot scripts will be accepted from Monday, March 23 to Sunday, April 5Submission is free. To submit, you need to be a current NUEA member and follow the submission guidelines at For more information, e-mail .

Directors and actors interested in participating in the event, keep an eye out for more information soon! If you want to be considered, please send your resume and online actor reel link to .
